Shopping Districts
The French Quarter
Chances are you can recall a story or two about the legendary French Quarter. This world-famous district spans 12 square blocks of downtown New Orleans and serves as the nucleus of nightlife, entertainment and shopping. The Quarter is New Orleans' largest shopping district and contains an unfathomable number of stores and galleries. Within these dense few blocks you'll be able to purchase jewelry, furniture, music, antiques, clothes and just about anything else you desire. There are literally hundreds of specialty shops and boutiques that cater to any budget and style.
Once inside the Quarter, everything is within a reasonable walking distance. Parking does get a bit crowded during the evening; get there a little early or pull into one of the many pay lots. Although several souvenir and T-shirts shops stay open very late, most of the specialty shops and boutiques close in the evening; so if you're in town to get some shopping done, a day trip to the Quarter would better suit your needs.
The Magazine Street
Throughout New Orleans' history, Magazine Street has always been known as one of the best shopping districts in town. Even the street's name, which comes from the French word for shop, magasin, lets you know this is a place where you can really spend some money.
Generally, the area is known for its high concentration of antique shops and art galleries. Aside from those stores, the street is also rich with numerous restaurants, clothing shops, jewelry stores, furniture stores and more; this district has something for everybody. There are stores that cater to the aristocratic antique buyer, as well as for the impoverished young student trying to find some great deals on vintage clothing.
No matter where you decide to start your shopping spree, there's no doubt you'll be able to find your way around with ease. However, first-timers to the area might want to drive around a bit before actually pulling over to get out and stroll around. All of Magazine Street is easy to navigate, and there is usually plenty of parking. Most of the shops open around 9am and close around 5pm.
The French Market
Although the French Market is located directly adjacent to the French Quarter, shopping at the Market is a completely different experience. While the French Quarter is loaded with countless numbers of specialty shops and boutiques, The French Market is a large, open-air, community flea market. Vendors show up early in the morning to set up temporary shop, only to break down by the end of the day. The five blocks that make up the Market can be thought of as the world's largest garage sale. This is truly a great place to get T-shirts, knick-knacks, trinkets and other mementos of your trip to New Orleans at prices much cheaper than the Bourbon Street shops.
There is definitely no dress code, and everyone is welcome in this open-air market. Even though most items are fairly inexpensive, you might notice a few things that seem a bit overpriced. Don't be afraid to haggle a bit. Although most of the stands already have set prices on all of the merchandise, it never hurts to ask for a deal, especially if you offer to buy several items at once.
